Backstory
I moved from Canada to the United States with my parents at a young age. I was introspective, being an only child away from extended family, and had a curiosity to understand the universe. This first led me to the great communicators – Plato, Tolstoy, Feynman, among others – then to studies in Physics and research on the Cosmic Microwave Background. This curiosity is ongoing; I’m still seeking to understand the universe.
For a long time, my intellectual and athletic pursuits ran in parallel. I started rowing competitively at 14 and didn’t stop until I was 26. We lost far more than we won and learnt that losing is an excellent teacher. Every loss forced me to confront the truth I needed to reach the next level. My final record in championship races was 3 – 36, but fortunately our last win was at the Olympics, where we earned a gold medal for the United States.
I believe the interplay between mind and body leads to progress in the individual and the world. While rowing, my mind tested itself by inflicting change upon my body and I believe great companies test their excellence by crafting tangible change.
On the lookout for
Those motivated to achieve a purpose greater than themselves. Brilliance, creativity, and will are honed by the drive to make the universe a better place. The expression of greater purpose is art, and art is at its highest form when manifested with technical excellence.
The process of an artist, athlete, or founder achieving their purpose is a beautiful thing. I see my own purpose as helping to scale beauty in the world. Those pursuing such a purpose need a teammate that is consistent through losses and wins, and I want to be that teammate.
